Role of the cloud project manager

The Cloud Project Manager oversees the management of a company's Cloud solutions. They define project objectives, draw up action plans and allocate resources. They work in collaboration with the company's stakeholders: internal technical teams, suppliers and end users.

When the Cloud project is launched, he or she plans, deploys and optimises the proposed solutions. They ensure that the company's needs in terms of data storage, processing and accessibility are met. They are also involved in the migration of infrastructures to the Cloud, looking after systems security.

Tasks of the cloud project manager

  • Defines the objectives, deadlines and budgets for cloud projects.
  • He/she plans the resources (financial, hardware, human) and draws up a timetable to monitor the progress of the project.
  • He/she coordinates the migration of data and applications to the cloud.
  • They supervise the implementation, maintenance and evolution of cloud infrastructures (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS) with suppliers such as AWS, Azure or Google Cloud.
  • He manages the risks associated with the cloud in terms of data security and regulatory compliance.
  • He manages a multidisciplinary team of developers, cloud engineers and security experts.
  • He monitors the quality and performance of solutions through regular audits and performance tests.

Technical skills

  • Mastery of the main Cloud suppliers and solutions (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) as well as IaaS, PaaS and SaaS architectures.
  • Understanding of network infrastructures, cybersecurity principles and data protection standards.
  • Mastery of project management methodologies such as Agile or Scrum.
  • Skills in designing and optimising Cloud solutions.
  • Ability to use monitoring tools to monitor the performance of Cloud solutions and analyse performance indicators (KPIs).

Education and training

You can become a DevOps engineer with an engineering degree or a Master's degree in computer science (5 years of post-bac studies). Some schools, such as the 2i Academy, offer specific training to become a DevOps Consultant.

In addition, it's worth knowing that certifications are valued on your CV. These include the DevOps Institute, Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Possible career paths

Depending on their aspirations, cloud project managers can progress to technical, strategic or specialist positions:

  • They may become cloud experts or cloud architects, focusing on infrastructure design, migration to the cloud and performance optimisation.
  • They may specialise in a specific area such as cloud security, DevOps or FinOps.
