The software project manager supervises the development, integration and optimisation of software in companies. They are involved in a variety of projects, including the creation of bespoke software, the adaptation of embedded systems and the optimisation of business applications.
They start by defining the functional and technical requirements, then their role is to support the developers on the technical aspects (e.g. the frameworks used). As a true conductor of an orchestra, they plan, organise and control the quality of the deliverables, ensuring that they meet the specifications and expectations of the users. At the end of the project, he/she ensures the continuous improvement of the solutions developed. In direct contact with the customer, they ensure that requests comply with the scope initially agreed.

The software project manager must be rigorous and have the ability to analyse problems and present solutions to his/her teams or customers. They have excellent communication skills, adapting their discourse to suit the people they are talking to. They know how to motivate a developer in difficulty, ease tensions with a client or communicate with non-technical decision-makers. Finally, their writing skills enable them to formalise requirements and draft precise documentation.
To become a software project manager, you need a 5-year higher education qualification. There are general engineering degrees with a specialisation in IT (École Polytechnique or Mines de Nantes), as well as masters specialising in software engineering or IT methods applied to business management (Master MIAGE).
In addition to the diploma, technical experience as a developer is essential. You must have worked in a variety of sectors and technical environments (digital, rail, aeronautics, medical, etc.).
